AUCKLAND SCHOOLS' SUCCESS. EMPIRE AND DOMINION CONTESTS. Cadet units of the secondary schools in the Northern Command scored notable successes in the Empire and Dominion shooting competitions during last year. The final particulars have now come to hand, and the achievement of the Auckland boys is a' record for the Empire.

The outstanding performance of the year is the winning of the Earl Roberts | shooting trophy by the Mount Albert Grammar School, with a remarkable score of 306 out of a possible 320. The trophy is open for competition by cadets throughout the Empire, and this is the first time that it has come to New Zealand. The winning team comprised Fire Director Sergeant-Major R. Jones-Parry, Corporal R. F. Wakefield, Cadets C. J. Robieson, W. H. Jenkin and A. M. Jcnkinson. A parade of school cade; corps was to be held this afternoon, and the trophy presented by Colonel J. E. Duigan, officer in charge of the Northern Command, but owing to the weather the ceremony was postponed.

Another notable success is that of the Rotorua Voluntary Cadets, who have won the trophy presented by Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, when GovernorGeneral, to the unit obtaining the highest score in the Dominion of New Zealand in the Imperial Challenge Shield competition. This competition is also Empirewide, and is fired under the auspices of the National Rifle Association of Great Britain. The object is to encourage mass efficiency in rifle shooting with the .22 rifle.

"The Press" (Christchurch) Challenge Shield, awarded for the best cadet unit team result for each Island, with .22 rifle, was won in the North Island for the second year in succession, by the Rotorua High School. The Islington Challenge Shield, awarded for the secondary school unit obtaining the best result in the Dominion with the .303 rifle, was in 1930 won by St. Stephen's College, Bombay, which school has again been nominated by the Northern Command for this trophy for the year 1031.
