SUCCESSFUL ARTIST.

The success of Mrs. Elizabeth Kelly, of Christchurch, in having two pictures lump in the Salon in Paris, after having one hung in the Royal Academy, will be very pleasing to all Niw Zealand artists, for she has proved that it is not impossible to succeed in the bigger world and still remain in New Zealand. Mrs. Kelly owes all her training to the Christchurch School of Art, which, under Mr. A. Nicholl, attained a high standard of draughtmanship, and it is particularly gratifying to have one New Zealaader succeed who has been entirely New Zealand-trained. Mrs. Kelly spent a year abroad, a short time ago, but that was mostly given to travel and artistic study. New Zealand has up to the present always had to send its artists away to get a meed of praise, and Mrs. Kelly's success is therefore all the more gratifying. The pictures exhibited were a portrait of Miss Edith Bryant, and Mrs. Henry Crust. Both are three-quarter-length studies in oils, and notable as examples of Mrs. Kelly's skill in the design of decorative pattern, treated with great clarity of definition under a full light.
