MYSTIC SECRETS.

INDIAN FOH.ETEXXS FUTURE. FINED £3 IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Mystic secrets of tho East as practically applied to fortune telling and the collection of shillings from the curious were given an airing in the prosaic atmosphere of the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon when Swaitti Godalphas, an Indian, aged 50, faced two charges of fortune telling and was fined £3 and costs on each by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. Swarthy, bearded and turbanned, the Indian made an arresting figure in Court, while his friend, against whom there was no charge, brought a picturesque touch to the public gallery. Senior Sergeant Fox said complaints were lodged with the police. The men had been successful in getting money at various solicitors' offices in the city. "Solicitors aro usually hard-headed citizens," smiled the magistrate. "Did they get any at the police station?" "That," replied the senior sergeant "is tho hardest place In town to get something for nothing." Constable Hart said accused told him a lot of personal things that were correct. "With regard to the future," added witness, "ho said that in November my luck was going to turn. In October of next year I was to meet a bald man who would give me a valuable business partnership and by 1940 I would be a rich man and travel. I would have three more children—two sons and a daughter and one of the sons would be very brilliant and make my name famous. Then the question of payment cropped up. He asked mo to write down what I intended to give his mission. I wrote 5/. lie looked and said, 'Five no good. Ten your number with God.' So I put down 10/. I was with him about 20 minutes altogether." Cross-examined, witness said he did not understand accused was a student of the Yogi cult. He seemed sincere in his beliefs. Constable Stewart gave corroborative evidence. "I have no moans of testing the sincerity of these men," said Mr. Mosley in giving judgment, "but I am quite prepared to say that they are good professors of the Yogi religion. I also think they have the ability to read the minds of their subjects in such a way as to reconstruct their past life. As for the future that is another matter and I don't think anyone can foretell it."
