CHINESE IN SAMOA.

The remarks of your correspondent "Taki" make interesting reading. Let me share with him the pleasure that some interest has been aroused in the welfare of the Samoan race. It is surprising, however, that he appears to have missed the vital point. If' he has the welfare of the Samoans at heart why does lie concentrate on the Chinese element only? There is no doubt that the Chinese are at fault, but he should know that the low moral conditions he complains of exist also among other sections of the community. If the Samoan race is to be preserved we must protect it from all foreign influence. Ridding the territory of the Chinese menace is just one small part of a big task. The greater part of that task is the protecting of the Samoans from the European menace. To go about this work of protection seriously would mean that in future all Europeans, including all halfcastes, should be strictly prohibited from marriage, or f'aa-Samoa marriage, with the native Samoan. Let "Taisi" and others who profess good will to the Samoans think more broadly and realise that part measures arc useless. If this work of preservation or protection is to come to a successful conclusion it must be done in its entirety. TUSALAVA.
