SOLDIERS OF MANY LANDS.

SHANGHAI VOLUNTEER CORPS NEW ZEALANDER IN COMMAND. Much has been heard from visitors from China, and items have appeared in the Press from time to time, about the Volunteer Corps formed from and by the citizens of Shanghai in their own interests. The commander of this body is a former New Zealander, Coloney N. W. B. B. Thorns, D.5.0., M.C. A Devonport friend of Colonel Thorns says that considerable space was given to a description of the parade of the Volunteer Corps in the "Shanghai Times" of April 11 Tho most remarkable feature of the corps, as the article indicates, is the number of nations represented in it. In Shanghai on that day there were the soldiers of many peoples. Headed by the Wiltshire Regiment, the infantry units commenced to file in on the right, and the Light Horse poured in on the left—the Russian Regiment on the right. In the first march past the Japanese company Inarched directly in front of the Chineses company. The majestic mien of the Scottish unit called forth many remarks as to what a wonderful country Scotland must be to produce such men and such clothes. Other companies on parade were tho American, the Philippine and the Portugese.
