SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A pleasant evening waa spent by the performing members of the Auckland Choral Society last week. During the evening a presentation was made to Mr. and Mrs. R. Strong in appreciation of their valuable services as secretary and treasurer. Items were given by members and friends, and games and dancing enjoyed. * • # » An enjoyable time was spent at Hamilton Road, Herne Bay, last evening, when a surprise party was given to Miss Beryl Green in honour of her departure to Australia by the Monterey this month. Miss B. Green wore a frock of flamingo georgette. Among those present were: Misses Joyce Paykel, N. Collineon, J. and H. Cohen, Hetly Leser, R. Shenken, L. and N. Ross, L. Emanuel, M. Singer, M. Robinson, B. Green and May Shenken. * # * ♦ Miss Dina Isaacs gave a morning tea yesterday at the Tudor Room of Milne and Choyce, when the guest of honour was Miss Gwen Cook, who wore a navy blue frock, musquash coat, and small blue hat. The table was daintily ect with golden Iceland poppies and gold baskets. Among those present were: Mrs. C. Best, Misecsr Irene Isaacs, Joy Porter, Vera Dewing, Mollie Mitchelson, Rosanne Lovell, Zilla Dixon, G. and Irene Cook. * • • • Mrs. Jack Parr, of Omahu Road, Remuera, gave a welcome home bridge party in honour of Miss Marie Jones, who has returned from Sydney. Mrs. Parr received thc guests in a nattier blue satin. The rooms were arranged with fragrant bowls of violets, carnations and daphne. Among those present were: Mrs. J. Buchanan, Misses Winsome Airey, Marjory McMillan, Dene I'lu miner, Molly Mitchelson, Wilma Frater, Jean Kent, Joyce Herdman, Audrey Alison, Peggy Ford, Janet Wallace, Doris Tills. * * » * An enjoyable evening was spent last Thursday, when Court Edith Cavell, Lady Foresters, held a social and dance. Amongst those present were: Sisters .Tamieson, Knott, Rawlins, Backhurst, Milligan, Lardner, Rae, Smith, King, Sutherland, Chester, Dally, Cook, P. R. Gargan, R. Couch, K. Couch, Bray, Partridge, E. Hewitt, Catran, E. Backhurst, A. Pliipps, E. Phipps,- Movie, M. Smith, E. Sfhith, Clarke, Bellingham, Davies, Dovle, Hill. Competitions were won by Sister Milligan, Bray and Bro. Backhurst. • • • • Under the auspices of the Mount Albert Scout Committee a successful dance was held 011 Saturday evening m King George's Hall, which was attractively decorated for the occasion. The 10:32 waltz and quickstep was demonstrated by Misjfi Myrtle Stonestreet and Mr. W. E. Chapman, of thc Jean Home School of Dancing, as well as other \ dances. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss K. Coleman. The M.C. was Mr. Keith Holdsworth. The entertainment was in the hands of the following 1 committee:—Mrs. AV. G. Gladding, who 1 wore a frock of black ring velvet, emjbroidered with diamante; Mrs. '5. (Meßride, in black brocaded satin; Mrs. T. Woodliead, apricot embossed velvet; | Mrs. P. The Kingsford Hall, Otaliuliu, was the Mecca of old-time dancers last Saturday evening, when the hall was filled with dancers from Otahuhu and all the surrounding districts. The latest selections were played by a good orchestra. During supper, extras were played by Mrs. R. Edelstein and Miss Phyllis Webber. The first Monte Carlo waltz was won by Misses G. Foubister and M. Kemp, while the winners of the second were Mr. I\. Edelstein, jun., and Mrs. R. Edelstein. * • » » Tlie City Mothers' League held their monthly social gathering this afternoon in the Mission Hall, Airedale Street. The afternoon was a memorable one, as the mothers and members were honoured by thc presence of the Lady Bledisloe, when her Excellency gave a short talk on motherhood. A musical programme was arranged by Miss W. Kent, items being rendered by Miss Mina Caldow and Miss Phillips. Mrs. Charles Prime acted as accompanist. The president of thc league, Mrs. Peter Lindsay presided, and afternoon tea, supplied by the committee, brought an enjoyable and interesting meeting to a close. • • • • There was a good attendance at the social held in the Compbell's Bay Hall on Saturday evening, when a pleasant time was passed with a euchre tournament and dancing. Mrs. Greenbury and Mr. Webb were the highest scorers in the euchre tournament, and were the recipients of handsome prizes given by Mrs. Carew-Tliomas. It is intended to hold these socials fortnightly, in order to raise funds for necessary improvements to the local school. Mr. Webb, the promoter, who takes an active interest in matters in connection with the school, gives thc use of his hall free of chargc. • * • • A surprise party was taken on Saturday evening to tlie residence of Miss Nina Wallace, Fern Avenue, Epsom, when a jolly time was spent by the guests in dancing. Flowers and gifts wero brought by the girl friends, and the wide log fires and deep coloured lights in tlie lounge and living room made an artistic setting. Miss Nina Wallace wore a black lace frock encrusted with diamante; Miss Janet Wallace, Naples blue satin. Among the guests were: Mesdames Gordon Bartleet, C. Court, Haytor Ferguson; Misses Gwen McGlashan, Moreen Fenwick, Mourya Goklwatcr, N. McMillan, Jean Wallace, Helen Asser, Molly Bailey, Cushla Orr and Doris Tills. * * * * At a meeting of the Auckland Piano Students' Association last evening, Miss Renec Satchwell gave a lecture entitled "Some Poets in Music." .Miss Joyce Parker presided. Miss Satchwell began by relating tlie legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, in which thc power of music over tlie inanimate things of Nature was portrayed. Shakespeare, she said, also illustrated the power of music in his plays and the same power, later still, was illustrated in thc works of tome of the poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Two poems of Dryden were read by the speaker, one being "Ode for St. Cecilia's Day" (St. Cecilia being the patron saint of music), and the other "Alexander's Feast." The work, she said, of some of the poets of these two centuries coincided with the music of thc more florid composers of the period. To illustrate later periods, "A Musical Instrument" by Elizabeth Browning, and O'Shaughncssy's "We are the Music-makers," were read by Miss Satchwell, who concluded by reading "Abt Vogler" (Robert Browning). Miss G. Piggott contributed musical items by playing Prelude and Fugue (Mendelssohn), while Rhapsody No. 2 (Brahms) and Rhapsody No. 3 (Dohnanvi) were played by Miss Satchwell. Another enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the Philistines Club on Saturday, when Mr. C. D. McLean presided. There was an excellent attendance, and .each item of the programme was given an enthusiastic reception. Vocal and elocutionary items were given by Mrs. K. Almao, Miss Lorna Kay, Miss J. Ross, the Snappy Three, Mr. Reg. Cawson, Mr. G. Colledge and Mr. Dan Flood. A sketch was given by Miss Scott, Mr. Dan Flood and Mr. E. Bridley. Mrs. McLcan acted as hostess, and wore a frock of taffeta patterned in rose and blue. Among those present we're: Mesdames Saunders. T. Clark, E. Verran, Price, Willis, 'laylor, L. 11. Hunt, G.
