"CLOSE IT."
COSTLY WELLINGTON ZOO. MR. SEMPLE'S SUGGESTION. LOSS FOR LAST YEAR £1000. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The closing of the Wellington Zoo as an economy measure is advocated by Mr. R. Scmpic, M.P., who, at a special meeting of the City Council, gave notice of motion to that effect. "I see," the speaker said, "that it is proposed to shoot some of the animals — to shoot the bull and feed it to the lion, then to shoot the lion and feed that to some other animals. I am seriously discussing the closing of the Zoo. It seems that some of the animals cost a lot to feed. The Zoo in the last five years has cost the city £17,000, and I say now, as I have always said, it is nothing more than a torture den for dumb animals." The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said expenditure on the Zoo last year was £3300, and the revenue £1700, the actual cost last year being £1000.
