RACES AND MARKETS.

OBSERVATIONS IN CANADA,

COMMENTS BY MR. T. H. LOWRY.

After spending five weeks on Vancouver Island, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Lowrv, of Ilawke's Bay, returned yesterday by the Aorangi. They will go on to Sydney and spend a week or two there beiore returning home. Mr. Lowry said he had attended some race meetings on the island and, in hie opinion, the horses did not compare at all favourably with those of New Zealand. "I saw a lot of nice little horses." he said. "They go hard all the time, but they are not bred the same way as ours." He produced a race card which gave seven events, the first race commencing at 2.30 p.m. and Inst at 5.30 p.m. There were no preliminaries, he said, and the programmes were pushed through rapidly, but with no apparent rush or confusion.

Mr. Lowry favourably commented on the system in Canada of farmers marketing their produce in the townships adjacent to their properties. Ho had visited many towns on market day and was interested to see the farmers, their wives and children coming into the market place with supplies of e«gs, chickens, pork, jams, preserves, etc. The farmers took great pride in the quality of the wares they oft'ercd at the etalls. He thought it would be a good thing if local bodies throughout the Dominion provided market plncee. The system had been successful in England, Canada, the United States, and other parts of the world.
