"TIN HARES" IN SUVA.
AMUSING INCIDENTS OF RACES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, June 8. The "tin hare" craze has reached Suva, and nearly thirty greyhounds have been imported from Sydney. The first meeting was held on Saturday, which wae a public holiday, and five races were run off, amid great excitement. The meeting was held on Brighton Park racecourse, lent for the occasion. There were fully 400 people present. The Government, for the first time, refused to grant permission to run a totalisator. It is believed that the reason was because of the influence the "tote" might have on the native races, but the remarkable fact remains that not one Fijian paid to gain admittance. There were some amusing incidents. In one race the dogs overtook the hare, and poor "bunny" was badly mauled. In another the hot favourite was well ahead when another dog came along, and the two started a light, allowing a rank outsider to run around them and win.
