TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES. STEADY IMPROVEMENT. The Nelson Bingen filly Mazda continues to improve, and the bay pacer can be depended upon to make a good showing at the approaching winter meeting. In her early racing she was not too reliable at the barrier, but she has now settled down and, being a fast beginner, she can get a good position early in her races. CHANGED HANDS. Mr. H. M. Allan, owner of the high-class performer Rollo, recently effected the purchase of the four-year-old Wrack—Victoria filly, who was formerly trained by J. Young. This pacer has shown a great deal of improvement recently and it should not be long before she makes her first appearance in public. She has gone into R. B. Berry's stable. BOTH GOING WELL. E. Kennerley is giving a lot of attention to the requirements of his pair— Peter Pirate and Real Girl. Both pacers arc df.ing all asked of them and they will strip very fit this month. It is more than likely Peter Pirate, a good stayer, will be the stable's representative in the Adams Memorial and Real Girl set for sprint events. She has a rare turn of speed. TRUMAN DIRECT FOR AUCKLAND. The American stallion Truman Direct, purchased by A. Hcndricksen and brought to Canterbury, has been purchased by the Mangere owner, J. T. Paul. Truman Direct is pacing bred throughout, being by Napoleon Direct (l>so from Nance Direct. He is the only Napoleon Direct stallion in New Zealand and he should get plenty of patronage from owners of brood mares in Auckland. RECURRENCE OF TROUBLE. Huon Voyage was trotting very well in his work before the recent Canterbury Park fixture, but when raced on the first day he did not race up to his correct form and he was not started the second day. He has had a recurrence of the back trouble with which he was afflicted a few weeks before the Easter fixture. He is at present under veterinary treatment, and it is not likely that he will be seen in action again before August. WILL CONTEST TROTS. The chestnut gelding Explosion, who can be raced as either a trottur or pacer, was never going better than at present. He is doing all his work at the trotting gait and will contest the events for square-gaited horses at the winter meeting. Ho is a little slow to gather up speed, but once properly under way there are few trotters in the Dominion that could stay with him. The reduction made in the trotters' races from two miles to a mile and a half will not be in his favour.

THREE IN WORK. A. Newdick has a team of three in work for the winter meeting. Dan Direct is the star of the trio, but he is now on a hard mark, and it is going to be difficult for him to win. He is such a solid customer, and never does anything wrong, two assets which always entitle him to consideration. Great Fame has raced rather disappointing, but time may do a lot for him. Fisher had a. reputation, but he lost it by eight failures on end. He is unreliable at the barrier, but he, too, should improve with racing. BACK AT EPSOM. The deceiver Rolfe Audubon. who can go fast enough to win races, but docs not do so when racing for money, is back once more at Epsom. He occupies his old quarters at A. Julian's stables, and the Epsom trainer will make another attempt to get the chestnut to race generously. As a three-year-old Rolfe Audubon went a j .slashing race to bo narrowly defeated in the Great Northern Derby, and big things were then predicted for him, but he has failed lamentably since and would require to win several races to put his owner on the right side of the ledger. ONLY TWO IN WORK. C. G. Lee is not very busy these times and is confining his attention to getting Win Huon and Parrish Belle ready. Both trotters are looking well, although they have not been noticed doing anything fast on the tracks. Parrish Belle is a very speedy mare, and the mile and a half trots at the approaching meeting will suit her nicely, particularly if the going should happen to be good. A heavy track may find her out, as she is not a first-class stayer. Win Huon is just a solid plugger, without the little bit of necessary dash at the end which gets the money.
