Reparation "Cut" Does Not Mean War Debt Reduction.
GERMANY SHOULD PAY
(United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright)
NEW YORK, June 9.
The Washington correspondent of the "New York Times" says the Powers receiving reparation payments from Germany have been informed through diplomatic channels that the United States has no sympathy with any programme which envisages the cancellation of those reparations as contingent upon the annulment of "war debts due to America.
The State Department has tacitly admitted that various foreign Envoys had made inquiries from the Secretary of State, Mr. H. L. Stimson, on the question and that they had been informed of the position.
Sir Ronald Lindsay.
Whether Mr. Stimson, as stated, in a London report, informed the British Ambassador, Sir Ronald Lindsay, that quite apart from the American debt phase it would be just for Germany to pay a reasonable amount of reparation is a question which was not answered in Washington yesterday. Officials declined to comment upon it.
Thi3 silence has led to extensive speculations as to how far the United States may have gone informally in supporting any given solution of the reparation problem at Lausanne.
There is a feeling in responsible circles at the capital that if all reparations were to be forgiven Germany it would mean that the cost of the war would be transferred to Allied and American shoulders.
