SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Pnpatoetoo Girl Guides held a successful bridge and 500 evening in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoc, last night. Mrs., T. H.. C. Partridge, the president, was in charge of the programme. The committee were Mesdames F. E. Carr, R. McCombe and J. J. Valentine. The prize-winners for the bridge were Mrs. McGrain and Mr. Pulleine, and the 500, Mrs."Bagsta'ff and Mr. Mephven. A surprise party was given at the residence of Mrs. George Vincent Henderson, this week, when a number of guests were entertained by some old fashioned games and dancing. Mr. Roy Collins supplied tho musical numbers. Among those present were: Mesdames Vincent, L. Harvey, Misses Zilla Impey, Peggy Reid, Elena Lindquist, Wyn Edgerley, Olga Gilling, N. McFarland, 1 ,, . Tapper, Ila Cuthbert, Hazel Niepier, Myrtle Connor, Eva Telsley, Aileen i Ivothwell. * * * • Miss Betty Henderson, of King'e Avenue, Mount Eden, gave an afternoon tea ..at Milne and Choyec's Tudor rooms yesterday. The gueet of honour was Miss Gwen Cooke, previous to her mavriage. The table was eet with tall crystal stands of yellow and white jonquils. Miss Henderson wore a dark naty blue ensemble, with small felt hat; Miss Cooke wore a maroon crepe de chine, with musquash coat and Lombard felt hat. Among those present were: Mesdames Albert Henderson, John Cooke, W. V. Robinson, Misses Irene Cooke, Emma Lamb, Ruth Sutherland, Joyce Porter, Lorna Blake, Winnie Todd, E. Henderson, and Joyce Dixon. The Otahuhu Social Service Association held a concert in the Orpheus Theatre, Otahuhu, last Tuesday evening, for tho association's funds for the alleviation of distress in Otahuhu. Tbc greater part of the- entertainment was supplied by pupils of the Blind Institute. The combined institute orchestra played '•Quarter Column," "Faust" and "Fox and the Hounds," while the jazz orchestra supplied "English Melodies" and "Maori Melodies," and the girls' orchestra rendered several selections, which were much appreciated. Saxophone pieces were played by Mr. S. Gordon; solos were eung by Miss Bray; Mr. A. Morgan gave cornet selections, while humorous sketches were given by Messrs. S. Gordon and J. Short. At the conclusion of the programme the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, thanked all who had helped to make the evening such a success. * * * *

There was a large attendance of members of the Old Thames Girls' Association at the Pitt Street Methodist Hall on Wednesday afternoon when a gift afternoon was held. Altogether about 205 new garments were received, and a htibstantial donation for fuel was made during the afternoon. The gifts were arranged on tables at one side of the room and included all sorts of articles for men, women and children. The clothes are to be distributed amongst any of the old Thames residents who arc in need, and the balance distributed equally among t.lie social workers. The president, Mrs. Alfred Oldhain, presided, ond spoke of the passing of Mrs. Brienell, a. life member of the association, and also of the recent illness of two members. Mrs. Woolley, -vice-presi-dent, also spoke. In a short address to the members, Major Annie Gordon mentioned the work done in the children's Sunshine Camp, and said that the gifts and help given by the Old Thames Girls' Association had been especially appreciated. During the afternoon an enjoyable programme was given. It included songs by Mrs. Offer and Mrs. Pilkington, with Mrs. McMiken as accompanist, and recitations by Mrs. Ferguson. *■«■** After the official opening of the Otahuhu High School by the Hon. R. Masters on Wednesday afternoon, the parents and visitors were the guests of the headmaster, Mr. F. W. Martin, staff and the school committee 10 afternoon tea. The tables were decorate! with bowls of beautiful flowera and the school colours, blue, gold and black, while the entrance to the building had been decorated with greenery and native grasses. The senior girls, who had clone some of the cooking in the school kitchen under the supervision of the cooking instructress, Miss Porter, waited on the tables. The guests had an opportunity of making an inspection of the building, the ladies being specially interested in the home science rooms, the kitchen, in which has been installed all modern cooking apparatus, and the splendid provision which has been made for instruction both in cooking" and sewing. Among those present were: Mesdames F. W. Martin, H. T. Clements, C. R. Petrie, J. M. Deas, J. Clark, W. W. Massey, G. F. M.issey, A. J. Murdoch, R. B. Todd, T. H. Eeeersall, 11. K. Archdall, R. McConnochie, R. A. R. Enting, R. W. F. Wood, A. K. Murray, W. Gatman, B. J. Parsons, H. C. Fenton and N. L. Garland.

Onehunga W.C.T.U. met on Thursday in the- Methodist sclioolrooin, when Mrs. Craig reported that .1 W.C.T.U. choir liad been formed, and asked members to join. Mrs. Musket asked for suitable books and magazines for distribution among the women in prison. Mrs. Pitchell, white ribbon agent, read a leaflet sent by Mrs. Peryman. Two songs were given by Mrs. Gilmour, after which Rev. Thornley gave an account of some of his experiences, while travelling through the Dominion.
