COMPENSATION CLAIMS.

INJURED RELIEF "WORKERS. LOCAL BODIES' POSITION. A suggestion that a combined effort bo made by local bodies to induce the Unemployment Board to alter the existing system under which each local body is obliged to obtain insurance cover for men employed under Xo. 5 scheme, was made by the town clerk of Otahuhu in a letter to the City Council last evening. The letter suggested that as the Unemployment Board was prepared to find each unemployed man the prescribed number of days' pay per week while he was :n good health, it shouM find no difficulty in continuing such payments during the period of his iiicapacitation through injuries received while engaged on relief works. "It will be seen that the above suggestion only covers cases of disablement involving weekly compensation, and does not cover cases of death or permanent, partial, or total disablements involving lump sum payments of com- j pensation," stated the letter. "This need not be fatal to the proposal, as if the board will not accept its responsibilities in these cases, the local bodies can arrange for insurance at much cheaper rates than at present if there is no need to insure against claims for weekly compensation." The letter was referred to the works committee for report.
