WEEK-END EVENTS. A GOOD ROUND BY MOSS. INTERESTING CLUB COMPETITIONS. (By TRUETEMI'ER.) Favoured by playing conditions which were little short of ideal, most of the j loeai clubs took advantage of 'the holiday ! on the King's - Birthday, and in spite oi l counter attractions good entries were received for the various events. At Middlemore, B. S. Finn, - who has filled the role of runner-up on so many occasions in the past, .played well to win the morning bogey match with a card of 2 up, while R. I). Ilorton was next with 1 up. The four-ball match in the afternoon produced some good scores, and I\. D. Wright and S. S. Wilson, who finished S up, combined well to win. Wright played the inw;Vrd half in 34, which included a G at the twelfth, and lie appears .to be gradually getting back -to the excellent'form he displayed some seasons back. H. .A. Joyce and 15. 11. Menzies, who finished 7 up. had a great chance, as they were S up at the twelfth, but minscd putts over the last few holes killed their chanccs of success. Joyce is playing splendidly just now, and although always sound with the woods, he is something of a wizard in playing controlled half or three-quarter spoon isliots to the green. Were lie to invariably play these shots when opposed to low-markers, lie would certainly meet with more success in match play, but he is inclined to play an iron when his opponent does so, usually with unsatisfactory results, Some hold that it is not golf to play a wood for distances of 140 yds to 100 yds or so, but this point of view is .ridiculous. Auckland Captain's Prize. The captain's tourney is now drawing to a close, the semi-final stage having been reached, and en Saturday interest was divided between the meeting of A. E. M. Rhind and 11. l'lumley, and V. Masters and E. L. Bartleet. In the former game Plumley was 1 up at the fourth, but he missed a short putt at the fifth for a half and lost the. next after putting his tee shot out ol bounds. Rhind became 2 up with a great 2 at the next, and -then lost lour holes on end, but lie stemmed the tide by w inning the twelfth with the aid of a stroke. The turning point came at the fourteenth, when Rhind holed a good putt for a 4 after finding'th.c bunker with his second, his opponent taking three putts, and turned what appeared to be a win into a loss. After an indifferent drive at the next, Rhind plaved an inspired second to within a couple of yards of the pin, and by holing a lengthy putt at tile sixteenth he became dormy ' The end came at the following hole, where Plumley s second somewhat unluckily found the bunker, and a half in 5 resulted. In his match with Masters, Bartleet did not produce the golf of which he is capable, and on the day he was unable to concede seven strokes, flic match finishing in Masters favour at the fifteenth. 1 MacEwan is the last hope of tJie backmarkers, and he flayed a steady round io dispose of B. t>. I inn. who found difficulty in handling the greens, while B. Ci. Ihompson. a rapidly improving junior, treated W. G. Bell to a crushing defeat. E. J. Moss, the club's professional, is playing lino just now, and is doing scores of 70 or better fairly consistently. During the week-end he returned a 70 and a 69, and. considering his effortless swing, the length ho is- getting from the tee is amazing, while his second shots and short game are almost faultless. His card of <i!) read:—Out, 3. 5. 4. 5, 4. 4, 3, 4, 5—37 In, 3, 3, 4, 2, 4. 4, 4, 4, 4—32. Titirangi and Maungakiekie. At Titirangi, the Saturday competition took the form of a foursomes handicap medal match, and this was won by R. J. Graham and R. F. Rogers with a net score of 72. This type of event does not find favour in club programmes at the present time, but a foursome match is really one of the most interesting forms of golf. In Australia it is very popular, and recently it was suggested that later on in the season one of our bigger clubs might hold an amateur foursomes championship over 36 holes. Should this eventuate it is certain to attract a good entry, and would no doubt b.ecome a regular fixture.

In the medal match at the Hill G. S. Meredith and G. T. Bennett led the field with cards of 78 —0 —69 and 85 —16—69, respectively. Meredith lias been playing well to his handicap in a number of events this season, while'Bennett. a second year player, lias made remarkable progress with his game, mainly on account of hard practice. It would certainly be hard to find a player who takes a keener interest, and if he continues to improve at the same rate as in the past few months he will soon merit a single-figure handicap. In the Country. In the open event, held at Pnkekoho. H. Coyle, G. C. Johnson, who later won the play-off. and M. C. Lawson tied for first place in the 36-hole scratch medal, and both Coyle and Johnson in particular have been playing well for some time, the .former recently having a close match with Black, who had record figures for the course, while Johnson performed creditably in the provincial championship. For many years W. G. Brosnahan. who is now living in Australia, was the leading player in Pukekohc, and the popular "Brossy appears to have left two able players to dispute the title of Franklin champion, a title which he himself held on a number of occasions. The Waikato Winter Show Cup tournament at Hamilton attracted a good entry from outside clubs, and S. C. Colbcck, who has a good record in various parts of the Dominion, played two nice rounds, each of 78, to win the trophies for the best gross scores. The visiting players did not fare very well, as the handicap events were won by locals, 11. G. p?veridge winning the medal and 11. Griffiths the bogey, while J. darken was successful in the 36-hole medal handicap for the Cup. J. Ij- Black was a competitor at Taumarunui. and with two fine rounds for a total of 151 he scored an easy victory in the amateur championship of the King i Country.
