LOUD LAUGHTER!
PRESBYTER,Y AND RACING. MINISTER'S REPLY TO PROTEST. MORE MONEY FOR EDUCATION". (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Statements made by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Downic Stewart, in a letter replying to a recent protest made by the Christchurch Presbytery against the Government's policy in regard to education provoked the Presbytery to loud laughter. The letter acknowledged the protest, and went on as follows: "So far as the remission to racing clubs is concerned, I think you have overlooked the faqt that this was granted only in order to prevent greater loss of revenue, as if the clubs stopped racing (and many of them are so embarrassed that they may do so) there would be etill less money available for education and general purposes. The remission was worth while from the Treasury point of view, in the hope of gaining greater revenue." Laughter broke out as the letter was read, and members were in high mirth as they formally received it. Messrs. E. J. Howard and H. Holland, M.P.'s, wrote associating themselves with the Presbytery's protest.
