SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

There was a good attendance at the annual ball held by the Pollok Tennis Club. Tho Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Dulce McEwen and Mr. Tom Avlward. During the evening Mr. Aspin presented the prizes for the Awhitu tournament events, with the exception of one won by the Pollok Club.

On Wednesday afternoon the girls' branch of the Victoria League held their monthly bridge party at the Evelyn Firth Home for Returned Soldiers. Prizes were won by.Mr. Gordon and Mr. Hogan. Among the players were Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, Missew W. Kent (convener), Iriabell McLachlan, Nell Grey, Zena Sanders, Nancy Abbott, Maureen Abbott, Bunty Johnston, Z. Guthrie and M. Matthews.

A meeting of the Whakatane branch of the League of Mothers was held recently in the Parish Hall. Mrs. W. Sullivan presided The Rev. S. Waymouth gave an interesting address on tho "Leper Island, Makogai." During the afternoon Miss J. Sullivan played one of Chopin's waltzes, Mrs. Hogg gave two little poems, and Mrs. Wad more contributed an interesting reading. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. * * # » In connection with the forthcoming women's efficiency fair to be held under the auspices of the Lyceum Club, a meeting of tho gardening circle was held in the club rooms on Tuesday. Mrs. Tattersfield, convener, presided. There was a large and enthusiastic attendance and a most generous response was made to a request for assistance in furnishing tho garden circle's stall. Many donations, consisting of jams, honey, vegetables, flowers, plants and garden products of all descriptions, were promised. * » * * A children's fancy dress hall was held at Devonport in connection with the St. Leo's school fund. For the occasion the parish hall was tastefully decorated. The committee comprised Miss Koefoed and Mesdames Heme, Patterson, Misses Walsh, Perkins, Black, Peacock, Roy, Tonner, Henely and Millar. A welcome was tendered by Mr. F. Williams to Rev. Father Wright, of Otaliuhu, who is succeeding Father Furlong, at present attending the Eucliaristie Congress. Miss Maureen O'Brien contributed the music for tho grand march. A concert held under the auspices of the Onehunga branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, and organised by Mrs. A. Howell, took place at the. Epsom Infirmary last night. Songs were sung by Mrs. Siinson, Miss Hope Aslicr, and Messrs. Rees and Harris. Mr. John McDougail gave Scottish songs and stories, Mr. Arthur Austin gave some humorous sketches and Mr. Jacob Elliott monologues. Instrumental item's were provided by Mr. Iv. McKay, Mr. Collins, Mr. Lionel Paul and Miss Connie Howell. Mr. Len Elliott acted as accompanist and Mr. Jacob Elliott as stage manager.

A dance organised by the Maiovo residents to raise funds for school improvements was held 111 the Otaua Hall. Jhe following itenls were given: Pianoforte duet, Mrs. Mcintosh and Miss I. Bright; exhibition of American tap dancing, Miss K. Creighton; Highland dances, the Misses fioodright, Hyland, Johnson and McDonald. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Denize and Mr. Newcombe, and the spot waltz by Miss J. Gnrney and Mr. S. Shoker. The following officers were elected for the year: President, Mrs. Connolly; secretary, Miss R. Brigh'ouse; committee, Misses Patterson (Puni), M. Hall, L. Lawes, K. Barriball.

A mooting of the Putaruru branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held on Tuesday. Mrs. Leslie, on behalf of the division, expressed deep sorrow felt for Mr. and Mr<*. L. Drummond in their bereavement. She reported having visited the W.D.F.U. stand at the Waikato Winter Show and gave an interesting account of the wool exhibits. ■Arrangements for the forthcoming birthday party were discussed, and it was decided to extend invitations to tho Tokoroa. Tirau, Rcpovoa, Ngongotahii, Matamata and Cambridge branches. The dceorations of the tea tables were left to Mesdames Hnthe, Van Veen and I Hobincion. The shilling "bring and buy" during the afternoon brought in a small sum in cash wbieli, with a quantity of vegetables, were handed to the relief I committee. The hostesses were Mesj dames Allwood, W. Baldwin, Dodd and I Duxlield.

The fourth convention of the W.C.T.U. School of Methods was held on Monday. Mrs. Kasper presided. "The form of constitution for a local union" was dealt with by Mrs. Neal, who answered many question*!. "Gambling," the subject for the afternoon session, was handled by 'Mis. Eccersall, president of the Otaliuhu Union. At the district executive meeting, which followed, arrangements were made for a temperance stall at the Winter Show, also for members taking part in the street collection for the Hospital Auxiliary on June 24. A strong protest was made against the remission of £35,000 in totalisator taxes to racing clubs, when economies are being made in old age pensions and in education; also a resolution commending magistrates for imposing heavy lines 011 intoxicated drivers of vehicles was passed.

A large number of members and friends of the Gargoyle Social Club of the Vacuum Oil Proprietary, Limited, attended the first social of the year last evening. A programme was arranged of vocal and instrumental items, and rendered by Mrs. C. do Berg, Miss Clinch, Miss Clare Brown, and Mr. Stephenson. Tho Monte Carlo prize was won by Mr. and Airs. Haines. Beautiful winter flowers, rose shaded lights, and the new quaint glowing heaters at the. Ritz, gave the hull and lounge a cosy appearance. Dancing took place in the Foyer. Among those present were: Msdanies Sutherland, J. C. Martin, P. J. Perry, R. Johnson, Stephenson, H. Bagnall, C. L. Hewson, Stone, McLcod, Shipley, Barker, Levene, Maxwell, A. G. Cate, McGregor, R. A social evening was held in the Parish Hall at Takapuna on Tuesday by the St. Peter's Women's Club. Dancing, games and an interesting programme were arranged, those contributing to the latter being: Mrs. Spiers, the Rev. Trill and Barbara Trill, Misses Stares and Hilda Trill. Music for dancing was provided by Mrs. Lane, Mr. Gorman and Mrs. Lawrence. The hall was prettily arranged with red and white streamers and red tubs containing bamboo. The Holy Trinity Social Club held .1 moat enjoyable dance in the Parish JJall, Otahuhu, last evening, when a good orchestra kept the large attendance of members and their friends in merry mood from start lo finish. The first Monte Carlo waltz 011 the programme was won by Mr. McPhee and Mrs. X. Walters, while the successful couple in the second was Mr. N. Han ford and Miss <». Foubister. Extras were played by Mrs. X. Wallers. The winners of the bridge tournament were Mrs. JO. Elliott and Mrs. W. 11. Payne. Mr. H. P. Lovell, the club president, presented the prizes to the winners. A valedictory dance was held in the Nurses' Home at the Tailiape Public Hospital this week, when the guests of honour were Nurses L. Hicks and C. Corney, who have resigned owing to their approaching marriage. Dr. M. Kronfeld made presentations to both 011 behalf of the nurses. Among those present were: Mesdames T. Ellingham (Dannevirke), 11. In order to raise funds to help carry jn the work of improving its tjchool grounds, the Mangere East School committee held a dance and card evening in the Mangere East Hall last night, which was attended by visitors from Onehunga, Papatoetoe and Otahuliu, and a large number of parents. The supper room, where bridge and 500 were played, was tastefully decorated with bowls of late yellow chrysanthemums and gold and yellow marigolds, while on the stage'of the hall large clumps of bamboo amf bowls of flowers were used to effect. During the evening Miss Moore, of Devonport, sang two songs, and Miss Home, of Onehunga, gave two recitations. Mrs. J. Gyllies of Otaliuhu, and Mrs. McDonald played several dance extras. Messrs. F. Phcsant and J. Key carried out the duties of M.C.'s. Prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz and spot waltz were won by Mr. B. Kirkbrkle and Mrs. Montgonierie, and Mr. L. Studd and Miss R. Kirkbride. Prizes for the bridge were won by Mrs. Ward and Mr. Biirnand, while Mrs. Sutcliffe and Mr. Webb were the succcssful 500 players. Tne ladies' committee present included Mesdames F. G. Massey, A. K. Belcher, M. Nash, Morrison, Mudd, R. D. Knight, and Burns, and Misses Caddy and Carnachan.

The annual meeting of the Auckland Ladies' Benevolent Society was held yesterday. The president, Mr. J. Ewcn, presided.
