WAITEMATA COUNTY. ANNUAL MEETING. HOSPITAL LEVY DISCUSSED. At the annual meeting of the Waitemata County Council, Mr. W. A. Bishop was re-elected chairman. It is his third term of office. The chairman welcomed the newly-elected riding members, Messrs. D. S. McCathie, Upper Waiwera; and J. C. Rennie, Mairangi Bay.
Committees.—Committees were set up as follows:—Sub-finance and works: Messrs. Bishop, Bennie, Phillips, Day and Paltridge. Building: Messrs. Bennie, Moor and Paltridgo: Unemployment and farm schemes: Messrs. Bishop, Glasgow and Day. Oakley quarry: Messrs. McCathie, Bennie, Kerr-Taylor, Glasgow, Moor and Paltridge. Mr. J. C. Bennie was appointed sinking fund commissioner iu place of Mr. O'Halloran, who has resigned from the council. Mr. Bishop was appointed representative on the No. 2 District Highways Council. Hospital Bates.—Considerable discussion ensued upon a letter from the Mayor of Auckland inviting the council to send delegates to attend a meeting to consider the question relating to the levy imposed by the Hospital Board on local authorities. Mr. Poyntqn urged that representation be made to the Government to provide that hospital boards should have first claim on insurance paid in respect of motor accidents. Mr. McCathie complained that, while many went free, the ratepayers had to pay in full, as they had a stake in the country- The chairman said he was informed that 62 per cent of the accounts for hospital services had not been paid, and some people looked upon the hospital as a free institution. It was eventually resolved that the county chairman be appointed as delegate to the conference.
