"FROZEN HOPELESSNESS."
In commenting on the economic situation of the Union of South Africa in March, the "Cape Times" stated that notwithstanding pood rains and good crops, "unprecedented distress prevails among farmers, who are paying labour in kind. "The banks can lend nothing; the insurance companies are inundated as never before with appeals for loans on policies; the building societies are refusing advances. In country and in town a frozen hopelessness has settled on everyone. Salaries are being cut in all directions. Boys and girls coming out of their school course have no hope of employment. . . . Winter creeps on. In every village, town-1 ship and city the number of unemployed | mounts and mounts, and everywhere the benevolent and charitable contemplate with dismay the hopeless task of providing even the barest minimum of relief." These remarks are preliminary to urging the Government to wipe out 'the gold standard.
