ESCAPED PRISONER.

CHARGE OF HARBOURING. FRUITERER BREADS GOTDTY. "HEART RAN AWAY WITH HEAD." A charge of knowingly harbouring an escaped prisoner, Frederick William Schluter, who broke away from Mount Eden prison on April 30, was brought against Alexander Mason, 35, fruiterer, at* the Police Court this morning. Mason admitted the charge. Detective Sergeant Kelly said that, unfortunately for Mason, the housekeeper he was employing was Schluter's wife. Schluter went to Mason's house

on April 30, after he escaped, and stayed there with Mrs. Schluter until May 15, when there was a row, and Mason told Schluter to go. Mason was a decent, respectable man and had never been in any trouble before. Counsel for accused said Mason now realised the seriousness of what he had done, arid, regretted it very much. Ho should have known that it was the duty of every citizen to assist the police. "But his heart ran away with his Lead," added counsel. • "Schluter's wife was acting as housekeeper, and she was going under another name, i When he found out who Schluter wa3, | he pitied him. However, he has. since : given;.the police every assistance." "It -is >a\serious matter to harbour an escaped prisoner," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., "and the penalty is £20, or three months' imprisonment. However, I will halve that. He's fined £10, or two months." Mason was allowed time in which to pay.
