Campbell Beaten By Palmer in

Nine Rounds.

REFEREE STOPS THE BOUT,

SYDNEY, May 2.

At the Sydney Stadium this evening the National Sporting Club of Australia and New Zealand" brought together Ambrose Palmer (Australia) and Allan Campbell (New Zealand) in a contest for the heavy-weight championship of the Dominions and the Beauchamp Belt.

The contest ended in a sensational manner, the referee stopping it in the ninth round and declaring Palmer the winner.

Palmer scaled list 101b and Campbell 12st 41b. The first two rounds were evenly contested, but in the third Palmer scored repeatedly with straight lefts. The New Zealander was severely punished, but continued to attack.

In the fourth round Campbell stung Palmer with a left hook and forced him to the ropes. Palmer, however, came back with a two-handed attack and squared matters. In the next round Palmer continued to score with his left and it was apparent that his body punches hurt Campbell.

In the sixth round Palmer continued hie vigorous onslaught and he piled up points in the seventh, repeatedly striking Campbell's face.

The New Zealander's defence was too open. Palmer also had the better of matters in the clinches, stinging Campbell with sharp uppercuts.

After more severe punishment in the eighth round the referee asked Campbell if he wanted to continue. He signified that he did, but in the ninth Campbell was sent to the floor for the count of eight, and after further punishment the referee stopped the match.

An additional attraction was the New South Wales welter-weight championship. Wally Hancock, lOst Gib, defeated Billy Grime, lOst 51b, in 10 rounds on points. LAWN TENNIS. AUSTRALIANS AT 'FRISCO. In the doubles Sproule and Clemenger defeated Neer and Lew, 7—5, 2—G, G—3, and Crawford and Hopman defeated Stratford and Neal-Brown, o—3, 4—o, o—3. Edith Cross, Pacific Coast woman champion, defeated Mrs. Crawford, o—4, 4—o, o—3. The Australians have left for Los Angeles, where they will play to-day and to-morrow.
