EFFECT OF THE NEW TREATY
COMMENT BY MR. FORBES,
SISTER DOMINION GAINS MORE/'
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLIXGTOX, Tuesday
It now transpires that the trade treaty between New Zealand and Canada was signed in'both countries on Saturday. The signatories were the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, Prime Minister, and the Hon. Downie Stewart, Minister of Finance, on behalf of New Zealand and the Rt. Hon. R. 13. Bennett, Prime Minister, and the Hon. H. H. Stevens, Minister of Trade and Commerce, on behalf of Canada. Documents in
facsimile were signed *md these will be exchanged by mail. Replying to questions to-night Mr Forbes, who in an afternoon interview had outlined the main effect of the treaty, said the agreement reached would be the subject of review at the forthcoming conference at Ottawa. He was prepared to agree with the suggestion that the sister Dominion would gain more from the arrangement that New Zealand -would, since New Zealand's main product could be undersold in' the Canadian market. Notwithstanding the lower duty, however, the way was paved for the friendliest of negotiations at the Ottawa Conference. No doubt Canadian traders ill Xew Zealand would welcome the outcome of the negotiations.
Mr. Forbes said that legislation ratifying the treaty would be passed tonight (Tuesday)*by the Canadian House of Commons and similar action would bo taken by the New Zealand House of Representatives to-morrow (Wednesday). Customs resolutions would be introduced and following their adoption the necessary bill would be put through all of its stages.
