SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Matamata branch, of the St. John Ambulance held a dance in tho Matamata Town Hall, when a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss D. Salter and Mr. Davis, both of Waharoa. Visitors were present from Hamilton, Te Aroha, Putaruru, Waharoa, Walton and Tirau.

The Belmont-Bayswater League of Mothers held a meeting at St. Michael's Hall on Thursday. Mrs. J. Schulz presided. An address was given by Mrs. Bates, of the Mount Roskill branch, on "The Protection of Women and Children and Cruelty to Animals." A recipe for the most economical dinner was won by Mrs. McDonald. Messrs. Louis, Drew and Hawkesworth also won competitions. Mrs. Bowman sang and Mrs. Young was tho pianist. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.

Mrs. E. Woodward, president of the Devonport Workers' Welfare League, established a fortnight ago, assisted by Mesdames G. Hardy, Ogilvie, F. W. Way, the ladies' executive, have dispensed foodstuffs to over 152 families. The league commenced work with a few shillings, and the splendid response made to an appeal permitted tho distribution of such a vast amount of food. It is intended by the league to hand over all goods on hand to tho Devonport Central Committee.

A pleasant hour was spent at tho residence of Mrs. J. P. Kalaugher, of Watcrview Road, Stanley Bay, on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Robin, a member of the committee of the Devonport branch of the Plunket Society, was entertained prior to her departure on a holiday in Queensland. Mrs. Kalaugher referred to the valuable services rendered to the society by Mrs. Robin, and made her a presentation, on behalf of tho committee. Those of the executive present were: Mesdames Hay, Vaile, Crawford, J. Newell, Palmer, Wynyard, Lanigan and Misses Bennett and B. Grahame. Mrs. Robin leaves by tho Zealandia on Friday.

Mrs. W. M. Cole, the president of the Mont le Grand Croquet Club, entertained tho members and visitors from sister clubs to an afternoon tea and progressive croquet party. Tho lawns were in perfect order and the bright sunshine added to tho enjoyment of the afternoon. Mrs. R. Hamilton, president of the Auckland Croquet Association, congratulated Mrs. Colo on being the winner of the cup for two successive years, and Mrs. N. C. Thompson, secretary, on winning tho cup this year. Mrs. A. H. Kcesing, secretary of the A.A.C.C, also spoke. Among those present wore: Mesdames Black, Bush, Carter, Thompson, Dupreo, Sessions, Hamilton, Truman, Badeloy, Harbutt, Peckham, Rogct, Robertson, Matthews, Smerdon, Evans, Tremaine, Kelly, Morley, Hicks, Simpson, Worthington, Thomas, Tattersall, Eastman, Williams, Scott, Stacey, Richardson, Taylor, Foreman. Prize-winners were: Mrs. D. Richardson, Mrs. Smerdon, Mrs. E. Peckham and Mrs. Hicks. On behalf of the members of the club, Mrs. Dupreo, vice-president, thanked Mrs. Cole for • her hospitality.

The Manurewa branch of the League of Mothers held their meeting last Thursday. Mrs. C. S. McCallum presided. Mrs. W. Bennett, treasurer, and one of its foundation members, tendend her resignation, as she is leaving to live in North Auckland. Much regret at her departure was expressed. Mrs. J. Muir was elected to the vacant office. A practical and inspiring address was given by Dr. Elizabeth Cole on the sex education of children. Touching on the need for right instruction, as made apparent by conditions to-day, she went on to explain how, beginning with his own simple questions arising from personal experiences, the child may be led on through the years to understand Nature's universal plan. She stressed the value in adolescence of healthy outdoor recreation and companionship, the importance of good reading, and the force of the parents' own example, ending with a reminder of the need for prayer, for where we have more knowledge perhaps than our mothers, they had more faith. The helpful nature of Dr. Cole's address was warmly appreciated by the mothers present.

The annual general meeting of the ladies' auxiliary of tho St. Andrew's Society was held yesterday afternoon in ■the Fabian Club rooms. Mrs. W. Black presided. Tho report of the year's activities, read by the secretary, Mrs. J. Howie, showed.that the past year had been a successful one. "Friendships and more cordial relations among Scottish women have been encouraged by the activities of the auxiliary, and that, after all, was tho primary object of the St. Andrew's Ladies' Auxiliary," the report concluded. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Convener, Mrs. W. Black (re-elected); vice-conveners, Mesdames W. Tongue and J. Budge; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mrs. D. McCrone; committee, Mesdames H. Wylie, Goldie, Kohn, Howie, Service, McLaren, Lornie, Muirhead, Small wood; hon. accompanist, Miss Braithwaite. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. W. Black, Mrs. J. Howie and Miss Braithwaite, in recognition of services during the past year, anil on tho re-election of Mrs. Black as convener several members spoke of her splendid work in the interests of the society. At the conclusion of the business an enjoyable programme, arranged by Miss Braithwaite, was

given. A duet was played by Misses M. Johnston and L. Braithwaite. Songs were given by Jliss Doris Webb and Mrs. A. Bishop, and elocutionary items by Miss E. Matthews. "Auld Lang Syne" was sung by all the members, and later afternoon tea was served.
