PRESERVATION OF LIFE.

HORSE TRAINER IN COURT

BRUNK IN CHARGE OF CAR.

COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE.

(By Telegraph.—Own Corrcspondon::.) HAMILTON, this clay.

"Public safety and the preservation of life is more important to the community than that you should keep your license to train trotting horses," stated Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, addressing William Frederick Saunders, farmer, stock dealer and horse trainer, who pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a car in Grey Street, Hamilton East, yesterday.

Counsel for the defence said that his client, though he admitted having had a few drinks, considered he was able to drive safely. A heavy penalty would have a serious effect, probably causing the Trotting Conference to cancel Saunders' license. He had never been in Court previously. The magistrate- fined defendant £10, cancelled his license till May 31 and disqualified him from holding a license for the following 12 months.
