LIFE RESTORED.
AMAZING OPERATION. WOMAN'S EXPERIENCE. The skill of Professor Arthur Meyer, a great Berlin surgeon, brought a woman back to life after her relatives had been told she was dead. Frau Gregor, 78, died in hospital after a fall downstairs. Frau. Gregor is the fourth person on whom Professor Meyer has successfully performed an operation invented by Professor Trendelenburg, the most celebrated German surgeon of modern times. The inventor was never able to carry it through to success, but Professor Meyer, after years of research, has modified the process and the instruments used, so that it is possible to make a daring incision to remove the clots of blood which choke the heart and cause millions of deaths every year. Frau Gregor told how one day she fell down the cellar steps, and was treated for a broken hip in hospital. "My Last Hour." "Suddenly I realised that my last hour had come," she said. "The ward sister saw my face change to grey, and at once alarmed the doctor. Then black came over me. I knew no more."
The story goes on from Professor Meyer's angle: "My assistant, Dr. Leinke, rushed to the operating theatre and said that my patient, Frau Gregor, had suddenly contracted an embolism of the lung and was dying," says Professor Meyer. "A little later doctors said that she had died on the way to the theatre, but I insisted that she should'be brought in."
The professor describes how, with, swift strokes, he laid bare Frau Gregor's heart and removed the embolism. Then, he carried out a further operation, the. pulmonary slit compression. Artificial respiration was applied, and the heart, which had stopped beating, fluttered. He gently massaged it with his thumb and forefinger. Still breathing did not return.
Professor Meyer then describes the I next stage of his process: "With the right hand I carry out an adrenalin injection. Now the heart begins to beat again, but faintly and irregularly. A fraction of a second later breathing returns. The beat of the heart becomes 1 regular and stronger and stronger."
