AGED JUDGE PASSES. (Received 11 n.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The death is announced of Mr. Justice Hcydon, aged 87, due to pneumonia. Ho was called to the Bar at Sydney in 1875. He was a Legislative Councillor and held Ministerial office in the Dibbs Government. He was appointed to tho Bench in 1905. As Arbitration Court judge ho was the first man in Australia to state the principle of the living wage, which was later given effect by Mr. Justice Higgins in the Harvester judgment. SIR A. MEEKS DEAD. SYDNEY PHILANTHROPIST. SYDNEY, March 0. The death has occurred of Sir Alfred Meeks, M.L.C., aged 83. He had been chairman of the Australian Mutual Provident Society since 1900 and formerly was senior partner in tho firm of Gibbs, Bright and Company. Sir Alfred was closely identified with philanthropic movements in Sydney. BANDMASTER'S DEATH. JOHN PHILIP SOUSA PASSES. NEW YORK, March 6. The death has occurred at Reading, Pennsylvania, of Mr. John Philip Sousa, noted bandmaster and composer. Mr. J. P. Sousa was famous the world over as a bandmaster of merits equalled by few others. Born of a Portuguese father and a Bavarian mother in 18.>1, lie made hie first public appearance at the apte of 11 as a bolo violinist. He then took to opera writing, dramatic and comic. Ho had charge of the well-known Washington
Marino Band from ISSO-1892. in the latter year forming his own band, with which lie toured the world in l!)10-ll, visiting South Africa, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. The band played at nearly all the big exhibitions. He was given many decorations and honours, both at home and abroad.
