NO DANGER SO FAR.
RUSSIAN BUTTER EXPORTS. POSITION NEEDS WATCHING. That there was no occasion at present for apprehension regarding the import of Soviet goods into New Zealand was the tenor of a report submitted last week to the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce by the special Russian Trade Committee. The report stated that information supplied by the Customs Department to the chamber showed that recent imports from Russia into New Zealand had been comparatively negligible. It was considered that at the present juncture there was no occasion for apprehension regarding the importation of Soviet goods into New Zealand. At the same time, it was considered that the exportation of goods from Soviet Russia which might injure New Zealand's markets overseas should be closely watched. The chamber considered it a subject for earnest consideration as to whether the increasing importation of dairy produce from Soviet Russia into England, sold at prices which can bear no true relation to the actual cost of production, thus unfairly competing with New Zealand dairy produce, was not fraught with serious danger to New Zealand. The committee, therefore, recommended that the report be sent to all chambers of commerce in New Zealand, with a view to drawing attention to the menace which the importation of Russian butter into England might constitute to the Dominion. It was suggested that those chambers report the results of their deliberations to the Associated Chambers of Commerce with a view to the Associated Chambers considering the advisability of bringing the subject before Sir Thomas Wilford, the High Commissioner in London, and of urging upon the Government the desirability of bringing it before the Ottawa Conference. The report was adopted, and it was decided to circulate the report to the various chambers in New Zealand.
