SWEPT OUT TO SEA.
PLIGHT OF MAORI SWIMMERS
RESCUED AFTER TWO HOURS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HASTINGS, Tuesday. Two young Maoris, Harold Smith and Sam McGregor, narrowly escaped drowning when they were carried out to sea at Porangahau, 30 miles from Waipukurau, to-day. They were rescued after two hours. They were swimming with other Maoris, when they were carried out by a succession of heavy rollers. No one could reach them, and they drifted rapidly to sea. A boat was manned, hut owing to the heavy swell could not reach the swimmers. One Maori was thrown against the side of the boat, and one of his ribs was broken. They then had to return. In the meantime Smith and McGregor, with great presence of mind, kept afloat by treading -water. Smith was then swept in nearer the shore, and two men reached him and brought liim to the beach. Another boat was then launched, and this- reached McGregor. Returning to the beach the boat capsized, but all got ashore safely. McGregor was veryexhausted. The two men were removed to the Waipukurau Hospital. Smith is progressing favourably, but McGregor is suffering considerably from exposure.
