Despite fashion's sway in practically all parts of the civilised world, there is at least one place where the latest frills and foibles are never allowed to enter. That is the Oban County Bail, which is one of the most exclusive functions among the Scots. Mr. C. S. Thomas, who has recently returned from a trip to Great Britain, described it at a welcome home given him in the Pioneer Sports Club, Christchurch. "In lots of ways Scotsmen live as they did 200 years ago," he said, "and I had a great time watching them arrive for this ball —the menfolk were dressed as they must have done years ago in France. One was in a velvet coatee with ruffles in the front, and then there were his tartan and his red and white diamond stockings. The women were not in modern dress, but were clothed in the fashion of about 20 years ago. The whole function was marked by that wonderful spirit that is typical of Scotland." » » # • The Devonport sub-branch of the Navy League held a pleasant dance at Devonport last evening.
