WOOL CARGO FIRE.
STARTED IN' BOTTOM HOLD: SPREAD THROTTGH THREE DECKS. CAUSE OF TROUBLE LOCATED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. An investigation resulted in the discovery of a bale of wool in which the firo on the motor ship Port Frcmantlc started. It was stowed in the bottom of No. 5 lower hold, and from it the fire had worked up through three decks of the vessel. The fire apparently originated in the centre of the bale by spontaneous combustion and spread upwards through each layer of bales to the top of the hold, where, by heating the deck plates, it continued to the other decks. The cheese which was discharged from No. 4 hold on Saturday was net damaged, and was loaded into No. 2 hold. A start has been made in patching up the holes cut in the ship's sides to allow the water to escape.
