MAORI BURIAL CAVE.

AT LAKE HEHUTAI. TWENTY SKELETONS SEEN. Tlio level of the water in Lake Rehutai, on the property of Mr. A. M. Ferguson, I3ay of Islands,• has fallen fully 18ft this summer, with the resxnt that the palisading of an old pa, and part of a stone breastwork, have been uncovered. There is a cave at this place which was always accessible even when the water was at the normal level, but now that it has fallen so much 20 skeletons may be seen. The Maoris say it used to be an old sepulchre of Lhc Ngapuhi tribe. An expert in Maori lore and customs might perhaps make interesting discoveries at this place unless the water-; rise again to the normal level after the next heavy rains. The Maoris are of opinion that the water in the lake rises and falls in sympathy with that of Laka Omapere, but that may bo merely a matter of conjecture, as" the rainfall tlw: fills one may have a similar effect 011 the other.
