TRENTHAM MEETING.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. COMPHIS A RECORD FOR CUP GREEN LINNET ALSO SURPRISES. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting was opened at Trentham to-day in beautifully line weather, and the track was hard and fast. There was an attendance above all expectations, and the totalisator turnover of £26,481 10/, compared very favourably with £28,700 10/ put through on the first day last year. Won All the Way. Jayson, favoured by a better start than ho often obtains, won the Trentham Higliwoigbfc Handicap from end to end. Early he led" .Shootist, Alpinist, Actaeon, Banbridge, In Vain and Pixie Gold, and there was no material change to the straight, where Royal Limond, who had received a bad bump within the first furlong, was again showing up on the outside, and Appledore, Babel and Elude in near the rails. Retract then suddenly appeared on the- outside, and -put in a great challenge below the distance, but Jayson stuck on to beat him comfortably by a neck, Baubridge being a length and a half back third. Appledore was a fair fourth, then came Actaeon, Royal Limond, Babel, Elude, Pixie Gold, and Shootist. Royal Limond and Retract should do better later at the meeting. As the result of an inquiry, i. Tucker, the rider of Banbridge, was suspended for a month for careless riding. The Stakes. Head Lady, although having her first race in sucn eTass, scored a brilliant win in the Wellington Stakes. Tea Chat, Gold Trail, La Moderne and Golden Wings were conspicuous in tlie early running, but Head Lady, who had drawn the remote outside, was also there, and, using her speed, was able to gain the front and come over on the rail before they reached the course proper. Head Lady was well clear at the false ra.il from. Tea Chat, Tea Trader, La Moderne, Korokio, Golden Wings and Rulanut, and, although Tea Trader issued a powerful cnallenge, iTead Lady ran on strongly to win by a length from her challenger, Tea Chat being two lengths back third, j with La Moderne fourth. Nedrest of t}ie others were Rulanut, Golden Wings and JtVoroKlo. An inquiry.: was held into interference to Golden Wings, Gold Trail and Prince Pombal, but the stewards decided that there was no evidence to justify any action being taken. The Plate. Two horses benefited greatly in the setweight- scale for the Apprentices' Plate, and over the closing stages of the race they wholly outclassed their opponents. They were Heremia and Oratorian, who filled the dividend places. After the field settled down Beacon Fire, Azalea and Princess Argosy, in line out from the rails in that order, were in command from Ganpat, Oratorian, Grand Lahu, Ruling Light, Chief Clerk and Heremia. There was no change at the straight entrance, but the leaders were coming back at the false rail, and Oratorian and Heremia then singled.themselves out,-the lastnamed, with a fast run op the outside, assuming charge "a hundred yards from the post, and holding Oratorian at bay to win by a neck. Princess Argosy was two lengths away third, just in front of Ganpat, then followed Beacon Fire, Grand Lahu, Landmark, Azalea and Ruling Light. A Surprise. f Silver Ring, the half-brother by Silverado. to Arrowhead and Kakara, who was | little fancied, showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals over the last couple of furi ' longs in vtlie Fitzlierbert Handicap. He was always one of the leaders and was i ■ second behind Arena on to the course 'proper, with Princess Bell, Courtyard, ? Copper King and Cockpen (nearest of the others. He issued his claim below the : , false rail, and, quickly gathering up the i ; leader, ran right Sway at the end to beat S. Arena'by nearly three lengths. Princess Bell was another length back third, with Courtyard a good fourth, and Hilary, Game Carrington, Copper King, Clangor, Gaysoing and Mister Quex- next. —Might was left and took no actual part in the race. A Record Broken. The Australasian record for a mile and a half went by the board when Compris won the Wellington Cup in 2.29, clipping half a second off the previous best. Arrow Lad and Esteem ..were responsible for the great pace. Tfiey made the early running from Great Star, Jaloux, Royal Saxoin, Monalof, Nea Lap, Gay Crest. Spearful, Admiral Drake, Compris, Royal Love and Peter Jackson. Royal Love made a fast run from the five furlongs, and Arrow Lad and Esteem just, led him into the straight;'-with Jaloux, Great Star. Gay Crest, Compris and Spearful all in a bunch just behind. Royal Love had charge at the distance, where Compris and Jaloux were hot on his heels and Peter Jackson was bursting through the field. In the run home Compris finished best of the leaders and beat Jaloux by half a liead.\ Royal Love being only a neck away, and Peter Jackson-right up fourth." Then came Gay Crest, Spearful, Great Star, Black Duke, Admiral Drake and Cluny. Royal Saxon was last. Had Peter Jackson not been stopped on reaching the leading three near the half distance he would most certainly have been in the money, as he was galloping over everything when his run came to a compulsory stop. A Fine Performance. Chrysology, who showed improving form recently at Hawke's Bay meetings, put in a sterling performance to win the Anniversary Handicap. Gold Pit and Ball led to the straight from Chrysology. Minerval. Nightmare and Shatter, anid at tjhe- distance it still looked as if Gold Pit 1 would succeed. However. Chrysology was not.to be denied, and, finishing in his best! style, he got. up in time to beat Gold Pit vby.. half a neck. Two lengths away was! Shatter;, who was running on well, and l close : ilp were Minerval, Nightmare and Spear Lad, with Don Jose and Awaken nearest of the remainder. The Sprint Event. There was a big surprise in the Telegraph Handicap. Green ( Linnet coming from the back and finishing all over her opponents in the final furlong. Equitant. Wise Choice. Arisus, Cadland and Leisure were conspicuous early, and Equitant crossed over on the course proper well ahead of Cadland, Autopay, Leisure, Wise Choice, Arisus and High Comedy. Equitant was weakening at the false rail and Cadland assumed charge a little further on, but then Green Linnet started a phenomenal burst down the outside, and, flying past everything, came on to beat Cadland by two and a half lengths. Gesture was finishing strongly, a neck behind Cadland, with Leisure, Arisus, Silvermine, High Comedy and Autopay nearest of the others. The winner, who is a half-sister to the Stakes victor, Head Lady, paid over a quarter of a century. Won Easily. ; -1 Dunraven showed how poor was the class . i 6i hacks engaged in the Ruapehu Handi- ' cap by the way in which he accounted for ! the field. Niggerhead, Solitaire 11. and • Gold: were" early, conspicuous, and they led into the course proper from Miladi, Dunraven, Hampden, Anemometer and Grecian Prince. Solitaire 11. hit the front just past the false rail, but she was unable to withstand the challenges first then ot Grecian Prince.

Dunraven was not pushed out to beat Grecian Prince by half a length, the latter being two lengths clear of Solitaire 11,, with Gold Sand the only other near them. After them came Miladi. Normandy. Saltpot, Anemometer. Royal Amphora, Sailor's Love and Hampden. Later results are:— FITZHEItBEKT HANDICAP of 160sovs. Five furlongs. 11—SILVER KING (Mr. D. Fraser), 7.11— R. Mackie 1 T—ARENA (Mr. T.
