RELIEF WORKS.
NOT FOR SUPERANNUITANTS. Evcrv precaution is taken by the Labour'Dcpartment to ensure that superannuitants do not take advantage of unemployed relief schemes, accoiding to a statement made this morning by Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of the Auckland district. Mr. Slaughter indicated that scrupulous attention was paid to determining the income of every relief work applicant. Each case was dealt with on its merits, and the destitute employed wageearner was given preference. If there were superanuuitants engaged in relief work, it would mean that the men concerned had made a false declaration in the inquiry sheets, in which circumstances and income for the past year had to be stated. Where a false declaration regarding resources was detected, tho offender was given the opportunity of refunding the money to the Department, which reserved the right to prosecute. The Department, iMr. Slaughter added, would not permit the son of a man receiving a comfortable superannuation to be engaged on relief works.
