CASE OF BEER.
THEFT CHARGE AT WHAKATANE. MAORIS SENTENCED AND FINED. (By Telegraph.—Offn Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. Before Mr. S. L. Patcvson, S.M., Willie Kin<n, C. Perenara, H. Semmens, W. Hataraka, W. Wavitini and J. Broderick were charged with stealing from Matata station on December 26 one case of beer, the property of the Main Trunk Brewery C'o., Taihap'e. All pleaded guilty. Constable dimming? asked for a heavy penalty. He said that a gang. known as the '"•dirty dozen" was a menace to the district. Kingi and Perenara were also charged with failing to comply with the terms of a probationary license. They were each sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to be followed by two years' re- | formative treatment and three months on probation, the sentences to be concurrent. Hataraka received three months' imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months' probation. Semmens, Waretini and Broderick were each fined £5 and ordered to make restitution £1 2/6 each. ill default one month's imprisonment.
