DRUNK IN CHARGE.

FINE FOR TAXI-DRIVER.

MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT,

A taxi-driver pleaded guilty, in the Police Court this morning, to being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Queen Street this morning. He was Percy Carlyon, aged 24. He was lined £7 10/, his' license was endorsed, and he consented, to take out a prohibition order.

Sergeant Clist said lie was on duty near the Town Hall about 12.40 this morning, when he saw a car being driven up the street at aoout 50 miles an hour. It stopped in a side street, and he caught up to it. The accused wa3 the only person in it, and he was very drunk.

Counsel said accuscd's father was bedridden, and asked the magistrate not to cancel accused's license, as his livelihood depended on it.

Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M.: It is no use imposing heavy fines these days. The people have not got the money.
