PARLIAMENTARY SESSION.
CABINET'S FINAL PLANS
UNANIMITY. ON TRANSPORT BILL.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
The Government is planning to finish the -session this week. Cabinet . on Saturday approved of the frnal legislative items,. which, are substantially, as indicated to the House by the Prime Minister, with the exception that something more than an abbreviated Transport Bill may be submitted. It is felt that the subject has been so thoroughly investigated by the authorities, •' including Parliamentary Committees, ' and opinion is so unanimous that waste in transport is an important element in the economic situation, that members may
readily accept the main Transport Bill, subject to certain promised amendments relating to local bodies. Therefore, if good progress is made early in the week transport legislation on. national lines may be passed before the elections.
A special committee has been considering highways finance and will report early in the week.
The Public Works Statement lias been completed "and* will, be presented this evening. This document "wilt lack its'former'-importance 'owing to the curtailment of expenditure during the current ■ year by 40 per cent. Only two railway construction works are in hand, but "it is intended-to. proceed with the extension of irrigation in Central Otago and complete the Waitaki hydro-electric development. ......
' The date of the general election cannot be . officially announced until the Government has ascertained' the ■ rate of progress ■'■ oil'the final;, portion of the sessional programme. '■-.., - .. ; .
