AMMON RA UNPLACED.

JOHNNIE JASON'S DERBY.

pfIAR LAP SCORES ANOTHER

CANTALA STAKES TO DEKMID.

MELBOURNE, Xovember 1

The defeat in the Victoria Derby of "the Auckland gelding Amnion Ea, who was a warm favourite, was the outstanding feature at Flcmingnon yesterday, when the Victoria Racing Club's Melbourne Cup carnival opened before a larire attendance, including a few New Zealanders.

.■ The Derby victor was Joiinnie Jason, who had run second to Amnion Ra in | the Australian Jockey Club's Derby at Kandtvick. Amnion Ka v;e.s not even placed, Chatham being second and Viol D'Ainour third. Amnion Ra and Opera King were next. Jolumio Jason was seventh iii ( the early stages. Ho f finished brilliantly, taking the lead below the distance and winning by one and a quarter lengths from Chatham, with Viol JJ'Amour a neck further back third. After the race Johnnie Jason's rider, J. TE. Pike, eaid his mount was always goir.g well, and he thought he had a great chance a longway from home. M. McCarten said \mnran Ka did not go as well as at itanclwick. He struck a little trouble at the entrance to the straight, but was beaten at the time.

Amnion Ea leaves to-morvow on ais return to New Zealand.

i Phar Lap had an effortless win in the Melbourne Stakes.. He won by half a length from the Wellington horse Concentrate, who battled on gamely. Veil•nond was third. The three place-getters were, bred in New Zealand. Phar Lap has now won £56,440 in stakes.' . .

■Ashley Keed stated that Concentrate ■■an an "excellent race, and would havi: done better if a faster pace had been set early.

The New Zealander Oratorian, half'irpther to Concentrate, wort the Maiden Plgte, but was lucliy to beat Picatiis, wiio finished fast and was only a necK away at the post. Oratorian's rider, Ashicjr Reed, won this event last year on Land of Nod; ■;' : '

JPike's "hat-trick" on• Vauntry, Phar Lap and Johnnie Jason was a notable performance. His"Melbourne Stakes win on Phar Lap made his fourth success in tlie race. He first won on Pen of Marsh in 1910. Johnnie Jason's victory s;avc liiin his -fourth successive win in the Derby, which he has now -won six times. ..^Results: — ' I ,:.■ '■■ ■,■ • • -"-. '..: .?
