* The Mothers' Club, Y.W.C.A., held.a meeting last Tuesday, when Mrs. Mann presided. Miss Doherty (membership secretary, Y.W.C.A.), spoke on the early ; days of the Auckland Y.W.GA. After*; 'noon tea was served by the hostesses.

The Women's Progress; Club;-held. a weekly meeting on,Thursday;afternoon at the Higher Thought-.Temple, Wellington. Miss; Ellen; Melville gave an address .on "Our New Zealand Women." For 43 yejrs women in New. Zealand had been given fhe;right>fo vote;; and'yet their progress in politics'had been far;,slower than in other parts of the world, where women were serving on juries, as magistrates, mayors and members of Parliament. A country is judged by its women, and those in New' Zealand must awaken, to ah active sense of their^ great-respon-sibilities and of the power for good that, has been placed in their jharids. , '

.A social afternoon was held'at the residence of Mrs; Peter Brown, .Waikoukou;. Valley, on Tuesday.- A guessing competition was won by Miss Mollie Watts, and two cakes were Avon by Mrs. F, Queenin and Mrs. Theo. Kerr-Taylor. Mrs r Hansen scored the highest in the miniature golf . tournament. Among those present were: Mesdames H. Cane, C, Watts, J. E. Owen, Hansen (Auckland), Clinton, Henriksen, T. Kerr-Tay-Morgan, N. Wilson, W. Hollinger, F. .'Queenin (Paerata), Misses Owen, M.Watts, E. Coughlan, F. McFarquhar and M. yCoughlan.' The proceeds were in aid of the Waikoukou Tennis Club.

A flag bridge-evening in aid of the Putaruru public library funds was held at Miss SturgneH's residence. The rooms were tastefully decorated with spring flowers. Brilliant sunshine favoured the Hillsboro' Croquet Club for their official opening on Thursday last. The president, Mrs. M. A. Thompson, after, welcoming a large number of visitors and members, called on Mrs. Grenville. to play the first ball, after which the greens were declared open. The players were favourably im - _ pressed with the excellent condition of lawns, which reflected great credit on the greekeeper. Progressive croquet was played, and the prizes were won by: A grade, Mesdames Maxwell and Whillans; B grade, Mesdames Furth and Wiggins; hidden numbers, Mesdames Richardson and Wiggins; ladder and clock competition, Mesdames Menzies and P. White. .

The opening of the St. Helier's Parish Hall took place last week. The Rev. - Houchen, vicar of St. Phillip's Church, welcomed Archbishop and Mrs. Averill, who declared the building open. Mrs. Averill and Mrs. Houchen were recipients of bouquets, presented by Miss ' Doris Tnglis and Miss Joan Gisby. The Avohdale branch of the Plunket Society held its annual'business meeting and •mothers' social afternoon in the Oddfellows': Lodge. Nurse Goulstone, "who Avas the speaker for the afternoon, illustrated her talk with a chart: representing the food, values of the various mammals. • The uses .of the various food substances were explained, and the reason for the difference in the composition of the milk of the . whale, the human mother, the cow and the rabbit. Nurse Goulstone explained"'that the Plunket Society is in existence today to give the mother knowledge to ensure that she shall give her baby a square deal, and the mother's greatest need is faithful co-operation with the Plunket nurse. Miss Newton proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Goulstone for her fine address. A 1 programme was given by Muriel Browne, -recitation; Master and Miss Weir, pianoforte duet; Miss James, solos; Mavis Wardle, Irish jig; Mrs. Bollard, pianoforte solo; and the pupils of Miss Zena Adams, fancy dances. The official opening of the Henderson Croquet Club took place- on Saturday afternoon. ■ The weather was. decidedly unfavourable, but a large number of members and friends were present, also visitors from the Mount Albert, Hillsboro', Glen Eden, Onehunga and Hallyburton Johnstone Clubs. Mr. Whitten, a member of the Auckland executive, was present, and at the request of the presi-. dent, performed the opening ceremony, in which he strongly advised all the ladies present to become members of the club, more especially those whose husbands were members of the bowling club. He called upon Mrs. C. H. Scott, the president, to drive the first ball, and the lawn was then declared open. Owing to the stormy weather very few games could be completed.

In honour of Miss Pearl Charles, of Taupiri, a gift afternoon was given on Thursday at the residence of Mrs. N. Wilson, the hostesses being Mesdames N. Wilson and A. Vollemaere. The guests played games upon the lawns.' Vocal solos were sung by Mrs. Vollemaere.
