THE ANNUAL MEETING.: BURDEN OF TAXATION. : ■ j (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") THAMES, this day. , The annual meeting, of. the Thames Jockey Club was held last evening, Mr. H. Lowe presiding. The report and balance-sheet disclosed that the club had passed through a difficult yeaiv. The receipts, including a credit ualance brought forward of £346 7/11, amounted to £7508 15/2, and the expenditure £7436 15/6, leaving a credit balance of £71 19/9. The sum .of £1980 was paid in stakes, and ; £2703 0/5 iu Government taxes, an , increase of £289 10/5.. The gate .receipts at the annual race meeting. showed -a,' decrease,■ ■, and' nomination and acceptance fees a slight increase. The revenue from sheep • was seriously affected by the low prices ruling. The local rates are still a heavy; burden on the club, and .the committee considered the time had arrived when- the Racing and Trotting Clubs should/make .a strong appeal to have • the properties :• rated as farm lands, not as • parks.
