HOARDINGS IN BOROUGHS.
CONTRODL OR PROHIBITION ?
QUESTIONS FROM WHANGAREL
The Whangarei Borough Council recently has been discussing its policy on the question of hoardings. A request from the Railway Department to Use an overhead bridge for advertising purposes was declined. The general question was referred to the legal and finance committee, which has submitted the following questionnaire to 30 borough councils: —
(1) Does your council regulate control or prohibit the display of hoardings? (2) If regulated; what is your council's standard of construction? (3) Does your council prohibit the erection of hoardings in certain streets? (4) What license fees does your council charge? (5) What control does your council exercise over the matter,- colour, etc ?. The, final question is: "What would be your council's attitude .towards a movement for the complete prohibition of advertising hoardings in boroughs?" So far replies have been received from Hawera, Taumarunui, Invercargill, Oamaru, Petone, Devonport, Mount Albert, Hamilton, Onehunga, Masterton, Eltham, Hastings and Gisborne. Opinions on the final clause are very evenly divided. - ■
