AN INDEPENDENT?
MR. E. F. HEALY'S POSITION. " ON URGENT PUBLIC BUSINESS." (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. As motions for leave of absence for any member are moved by the party whip, the House at once saw significance in. the application made yesterday afternoon by Mr. W. D. Lysnar (Independent, Gisborue) for four days' leave of absence for Mr. E. F. Healy, formerly Government member for Wairau. The ground of the application was "urgent public business," and the. announcement provoked loud laughter and private banter, including a question by Mr. J. S. Fletcher {Independent, Grey Lynn) as to whether the mover was the chief whip of the Independent group.
Mr. Healv at present is addressing meetings in' his electorate on the stoppage of the South Island Main Trunk, and has already intimated that lie will act with a free hand in the House for the remainder of the session.
