CHEAPER FERTILISERS.
OPERATION OF SUBSIDY. NOT TO BE RETROSPECTIVE. (By Telegraph—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Government cannot agree to make retrospective to October 1, the provisions of the subsidy which enables superphosphates to be sold at a reduced rate to the farmer, according to a statement made' in the House yesterday by the Hon. D. Jones, Minister of Agriculture. The Minister, in replying to a question on the subject by Mr. F. Lye (Government, Waikato) said the agreement had been made witli tlie companies, and. farmers, he thought, had received sufficient -public notice of the_ fact. Whatever date had been fixed, it was inevitable that some farmers would not be able to benefit by the subsidy. It had been represented by Mr. Lye that many farmers had ordered their fertilisers when bonus payments were announced for September 20, and as delivery was obtained last week, the farmers concerned were debarred from participation in the benefits of the subsidy.
