NEW TRAFFIC CONTROL.
BELLS DISPENSED WITH.
RESULTS SO FAR GOOD.
A further tria"l was made yesterday at the corner of Upper Symonds Street and IChyber Pass, of the automatic traffic control. Warning bells were dispensed with, but those using the road seemed to have little difficulty in seeing and obeying the semaphores. The traffic officers, stationed at the three signal points, directed those motorists who did not understand what to do. To provide an uninterrupted lane round Hotel Astor corner into Kliyber Pass a white line had been painted on the road. Most drivers appeared to realise that-if they wished to make a left-hand turn they could ignore the "stop" signal.- Those who did halt were waved on by the traffic officers. Motorists were warned by a notice that there must not be right-hand turns into Khyber Pass from the southern side, but if such a turn were intended, drivers could make it below the safety zone at the section. Further tests will be made in the afternoons for the mutual benefit of traffic officers and motorists. So far the apparatus has not been used in the r.ush hours, but it is intended to try it later in those hours. While results r,o far have been encouraging, it is impossible to pass a final judgment until the apparatus has been tried under all c6nditions of traffic.
