EARL OF ORFORD'S PASSING
GATHERING AT ST. MATTHEW'S
NAVAL MEN PAY TRIBUTE
The tall, white columns and Gothic arches of St. Matthew's, Street, formed fitting surroundings for the impressive funeral service conducted this morning for the late Earl of Orford, who died at "liis home at Manuvcwa on Sunday.
The altar and chancel were decorated simply yet strikingly with arum lilies, and at the foot of the bier was placed a vase of white flowers. There was a large attendance of the public. Marines from tho three ships in port, Philomel, Diomede and Laburnum, were present in token of recognition that the carl had been a naval man. Commander Berthon, in command "of the New Zealand Squadron, attended.
;! The officiating minister was Canon Grant Cowen, and Archbishop Averill read the lesson, taken from 1 Corinthians, XV. The service opened with the singing of the hymn "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," and. continued with appropriate prayers. The "Dead March in Saul" throbbed out its deep-toned volume, and was followed by the hymn, "Peace, Perfect Peace." Psalm XC. was read, beginning with the words, "Thou hast been our refuge, from one generation to another."
The body is to be embalmed and sent to England for burial on the family estates at Wolterton Park, Norwich.
