PIANO AND SONG.
YOUNG AUCKLANDERS' RECITAL,
A delightful evening's entertainment was provided at the Lewis Eady Hall last evening, when two young " Auckland artists. Molly Atkinson, mezzo-soprano, and Phyllis Graham, pianist, gave a joint in which they were assisted by Moya Cooper-Smith, violinist. The selection of works and the performance were both of a high standard. Miss Atkinson's songs covered a wide range and gave her every opportunity to demonstrate the quality and compass of her voice, and her undoubted pleasing powers of expression. Among her items were songs by Scarlatti, Brahms, Schubert and Schumann. Miss Graham gave a thoughtful reading of Mozart's "Fantasia in C Major." Included in her performance were Brahms' "Rhapsody in B Minor.'' aiso Mendelssohn's
"Andante and Rondo Capriccioso." Except for one or two slight slips this was a very brilliant and crisp rendition. Chopin and Debussy were also included in Miss Graham's programme. She played with good tone and touch, and also made a self-effacing accompanist. Miss CooperSmith played the Allegro from the Beethoven No. 5 violin sonata and "Scene de Ballet" (de Berioti. The last was given with admirable restraint and great artistry. The finished work of these young performers shows that they have been well taught and the whole concert was a credit to all concerned.
