SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On. Saturday evening last a 500 card wenirig; was»: held • at the residence' of Mrs. . Allan, Avondale Road, Avondale, :he. proceeds of which were to augment 'he funds of the local cricket queen, Miss Brown. The prize-winners were: — Ladies, Mrs. H. Green 1, Mrs. S. Morrish gentlemen, C. Webb 1, S. Shaw 2; »nsolations, Mrs. Lyons and Mr. NewSon.

A; coming-of-age party was given by Mr.-and Airs. Harvey Laybourn at Newmarket in honour of their son Ernest. There were about. 50 guests present, and .the . evening was spent in games, competitions and musical items. Songs were rendered by Miss Isa Campbell and Mr. Orr, and pianoforte solos by Miss D. Hughson and Miss V. Rout. Mr. Hughson, an old friend of the family, congratulated the guest of honour on reaching his majority. Mr. E. Laybourn suitably replied. Mr. Laybourn then presented his son with a large wooden key which had been autographed by all the guests. A dainty supper was served, after which the birthday cake, surrounded by 21 candles, was cut and handed around.

The Devonport sub-branch of the Navy League held' an attractive dance last evening, prior to the departure of H.M.S. Diomede. The committee comprised: Mrs. Cleland-Pottie (president of the league), in embossed georgette and silver, with■ cherry Oriental coatee; Mrs. H. Melvin, black georgette, trimmed with diamante and coatee; Mrs. T. Palmer, champagne taffeta; Miss Melville, embossed black and gold georgette; Miss Tatton, shell pink, with cream embossed shawl; Miss Bertrand, pale blue satin, with coatee to tone; Miss Parker, apple ?reen floral chiffon; Miss Wood, white 3oral chiffon and shawl. Madamo Marghcrita Zelanda was guest of honour at a Very enjoyable uiorning tea held by members of the musical circle of the Lyceum Club in the club lounge yesterday. The reception was arranged by Miss Kent and members of the executive were present. Mrs. J. C. Dickinson, acting-president of the club, introduced Madame Zelanda, who later spoke on musical life in Italy and the difficulties that were liable to cross the paths'/of students, a One of- the worst difficulties, she said, - was to obtain a good teacher. There were a great many who could not teach at all, but were on the look-out for ignorant students. Madame Zelanda related a number of her experiences in Italy, conclttded with an account of Mussolini.

There was a, fine sliow of bulbs at the spring fair held in St. Andrew's Hall, Matamata, in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. Members of. the Ladies' Guild were the organisers of the function. The choice blooms "came from Mrs'.' E. C. Banks' gardens. A competition for scones was won by; Miss Jean MacDonald. . A butter : sponge competition was'won by"Mrs. A.'Boyes. Mr.'P. Jones presented the prizes '• and congratulated the Ladies' Guild on the' success of the afternoon. The ladies "responsible for the organisation of the fair were-Mesdames M. Griffiths (president), J. • The Tamaki United Association Football Club held their annual ball in the Peerless Hall, St. Helier's Bay, on Thursday last. The hall was tastefully decorated with white streamers and coloured balloons. The hostess for the evening was Mrs. P. Webster, wearing pale blue georgette and lacc. The ladies' committee was:—Mrs. B. Koeford, blush rose georgette; Mrs. P. Spence, green georgette; Miss J. Austen, primrose georgette; Miss M. White, lemon and blue lace; Miss B. Hoyte, eau de nil satin beaute.
