In the closing series of matches attached to the Devonport Shield,- chief interest was centred round the struggle between. Sonierville and North Shore at the stadium. With the mainstays of the. Somerville team away shield hunting! some attention was given to the encounter between University and St. Luke s. North Shore, after being three to one down on the first spell, made an astonishing recovery, and in a fast game, scor-> ing five goals in the second spell, came out victorious by six goals to three a fine achievement. University obtained a very narrow marginal win oyer Bt, Luke's by a solitary goal. Mount Eden defeated Wesley by 3 goals to 1.

SHORE V. SOMERVIU.E.

Somerville were aggressive early, but Shore quickly and Anthony opened the scoring. Somerville then took charge, and before half-time goals had been scored by Glanville (2), and Schneideman. In the second half Shore were continuously on the attack, and in quick succession five goals were scored by Penman (2), Wilson and Anthony (2), the game ending;— North Shore 6 Someryille 3

MOUNT EDEN V. WESLEY.

This was a hard-hitting and closely-con-tested game. Fleet opened the scoring for Wesley, but H. Jones equalised, and they were one-all at half-time. In the second spell Mount Eden got on top, goals being scored by H. Jones and Anthony, the final score being: — Mount Eden 3 Wesley 1

UNIVERSITY V. ST. LUKE'S,

This was the keenest game of the day, and there was qo score in the first half. The second spell was well advanced before Taylor got a shot into the net for University, and this proved the only score of the. mateh, despite desperate narrow escapes on both sides. VICTORY FOR AUCKLAND

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.

The Auckland hockey representatives beat Canterbury this afternoon in a challenge match for the Hockey Shield, by 3 goals to 2. ■ Auckland played a good game and deserved its win. Canterbury played a better game than in previous challenge matches this season, but was not up to Auckland's standard. The visitors had the better combination and more skilful stiak play. Canterbury made valiant effort's toward the close of the game to equalise the score, but lacked finesse and the Auckland backs were equal to the occasion.

Auckland scored its first goal when C Watts took a shot from a corner, Canterbury equalised after a good rush at the end of which Turbitt scored and at half-time the scores were: Auckland 1, Canterbury 1. " :

At the opening of the second half Auckland attacked strongly and Canterbury conceded a corner.' C. Watts took the shot and scpred. Auckland still kept control of the game and, after a good attack by the forwards, E. Watts wade a splendid opening for Welbourne. who scored an easy goal. Auckland 3, Canterbury 1.

Canterbury scored its second goal when Fullwood managed to get a shot through from a scramble in the circle, making the final score: Auckland 3, Canterbury 2.

Canterbury had held the shield for three years and to-day's match was the sixth it has played this season.
