STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

RASCAL VERY WELL. Rascal, who is engaged at the Otago Hunt meeting to-morrow, ia jreported to be very well at present and ne will have plenty of friends for his engagement. At the" recent Grand National meeting Rascal finished fifth in the Winter Cup, fourth in the August Handicap, and won the Heathcote Handicap in good style. WORKING WELL. Red Boa returned to Southland after the Grand National meeting. He had a lengthy absence from his home quarters, during which he raced at several of the winter meetings, going as far north as Trentham, where he ..was a winner in July. He is working well at Invercargill, and he is in great condition, so he should be on the winning list again very soon. SON OF GOLD LIGHT. Shining Gold, the. three-year-old colt by Arausio—Gold Light is a very handsome youngster (states an Invercargill writer). He was on the local track recently, but was not asked to do any work, and his future has not yet been decided upon. He looks like furnishing into a really fine type of thoroughbred and on looks he should develop into a good performer for Mr. W. T. Hazlett. Shining Gold has yet to race in New Zealand, but he started several times in Australia as a two-year-old without any great degree of success. He is a younger full-brother to his stable mate, Gold Ray. WINTERED WELL. Few horses at Ellerslie have wintered better than Brampton, and J. Buchanan should have a good season with the Lord Quex gelding. Brampton ran a number of good races last season, winning on five occasions, and as he earned nearly £800 in stakes must have more than paid his way. Be is sound, also a good constitutioned horse, and, judged on his present conditon, is likely, to do better still before the present term is over. GAY COCKADE'S PROGRESS. "■ Gay Cockade has done little fast work since he contested the Jellicoe Handicap,; but W. Hawkins seldom gallops the Depredation gelding until a couple of weeks before a meeting. He looks nice and fresh and will be in first-rate condition for the Avondale meeting at the end of this month. This gelding is inclined to hang out on a right-handed track, this being particularly noticeable at Ellerslie; still, he ran a good race in the Jellicoe Handicap and should do well during the next few months.
