STILL A MYSTERY.

PALMERSTON SHOOTING CASE.

LETTER THREATENING TO KILL

POCKETS RIMMED WITH BLOOD.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent)

PALMEESTON N., Wednesday.

No major development has occurred in connection with the shooting of Edwin John Blakeway, who- was found dead near his racing bicycle five miles from Palmerston North on Monday morning, despite the fact that the police are keenly investigating under the leadership of Inspector P. Harvey, SeniorDetective T. Quirke, and Detectives Barling and Russell. Information which came to light today caused the detectives to examine the theory of jealousy as a possible cause of the crime. This was to the effect that over a month ago Mr. Blakeway received a letter in which the writer threatened to kill. him. The letter, which is believed to have been signed, had been seen by more than one person at Otaki, where deceased then resided. Exhaustive search by the police has failed to disclose the letter, and it is feared that it had been destroyed by deceased. When the body was found all the pockets of the inner and outer clothing were rimmed with blood, apparently from the hands of the attacker when searching for money or possibly for the letter. At least three persons are certain that deceased was carrying £20 in notes when he left to visit a girl friend on Sunday evening. Only 1/4 was in the clothing when the body was found.
