ANNUAL PRIZE NIGHT
The thirty-sixth annual presentation of prizes of the Akarana Yacht Club took place last evening in the clubhouse, Mechanics' Bay.
The visitors included Commander Berthon, of 11.M.5. Philomel; Captain H. a. Sergeant, Lieut.-Commander W. C. Juer, Captain Erling Tambs, Messrs. J. H. Fratei, vice-commodore Royal N.Z. Yacht Squadron, C. H. Palmer, chairman \acht and Motor Boat Association, members of the crew of ■ the yacht Northern Light, and representatives from sister clubs. Apologies and best wishes for a successful evening were received from the Hon. J. B. Donald and Messrs. W. P. Endean, M.P., and Chas. Sundstrum, of Dunedin. Commodore F. W. Jeffcrs welcomed the visitors, and said that five days racing was carried out, and, although the entries were not equal to past years, all the races were well contested. The priaea numbered 54. Mr. Jeffers also referred to the transTasman yacht race, inaugurated by the club, and won by Captain Erling Tambs, who was also to receive a special cup. Captain Sergeant, who presented the prizes, congratulated the club on the results of last season, and especially for inaugurating the Tasman Cup race, which bid fair to become a well-contested event, attracting great attention in Australia and New Zealand. „.„,,. ~.,„ The principal prizes were the Brett Cup, for Star class, won by R. Mouat s Moa, Heolin Cup, won by J. Scott s Bungaree; Captain White Cup, won by Geo. Smiths Mowai; Clubhouse Cup, won by Patrick and Cloke's Speedwell; Club 14ft Championship, won by J. Cleaver s Lois, Club Cup, won by A. Willett's Sybila; AUsa Craig Cup, won by Geo. Grimmer's> Octatrta S • Points Flag, won by Dane Mackay's Wairiki; and the booby prize, won by Muritai. Other prize winners were Fay, Manene, Crusader, Janet, Nyna, Omatere, Starlight, Valeria, Waione . Why Not, Doreen, Huia, Maybelle, VJairere, June, Maratea, Resolute and Awatcre. Rev J. Calder who presented the "Skipper's Cup" to Captain Tambs, said that the club had originated the Tasman Cud and he congratulated both the donors and the winner. Mr. Calder also referred to the Norwegian flag winch the a eddy had carried from Norway to New Zealand, and presented to the dub by Captain Tambs. This would remain as a souvenir of the race. Both the donor of the cup and the winner were accorded hearty cheers on the call of the commodore, who also thanked the ladies' committee and all who helped to make the evening a success. Dancing was resumed after supper.
