WIN FOR WANGANUI.

HAWKE'S BAY OUTCLASSED

GREAT WORK BY LOCAL

FORWARDS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WANGANUI, Wednesday

The Wanganui Rugby representatives surprised even their most sanguine supporters this afternoon by defeating the touring Hawke's Bay team by 8 points to 0, in a game which did not rise to anything like a spectacular exhibition. Until the second spell the. weather was fine, but dull, and the ground was very fast. There was an attendance of about 2000 spectators.

.The visitors were feeling the effects of their journey from Auckland, and at no •time was their display up to the former standard set by Hawke's Bay. Cooke was only a shadow, of his former self, but was responsible for splendid line-kicking, and saved his side on numerous occasions. Yates played a splendid game as fullback for Hawke's Bay, and was always safe. Rhodes, Setford and Evans ••were prominent in the Hawke's Bay backs, and Bures, Wanoa, Gemmell and Fitzgibbon showed up among the forwards.

Wanganui played like a team inspired, the forwards especially. Though conceding weight in the pack they were more than a match for the Hawke's Bay forwards in the tight and the loose. Mainly through their efforts play was for the 'greater part of the match in Hawke's Bay territory. Lowe was safe at full-back and Bullock-Douglas was brilliant on the wing.

There was no score before half-time. In the second spell Melntyre scored from play in front of the goal, Bullock-Douglas converting. Not long before the final whistle Yates was caught in possession of the ball, and Tasker secured Wanganui's second try. The kick was short.
